Surviving High School is a video game developed and published by Electronic Arts for iOS in 2009 and for Android in 2011. New episodes are released weekly sometime between 10:30 am and noon (based on the Pacific Time Zone) on Thursdays. Its gameplay mechanics and visuals are very similar to Cause of Death, which is also an EA game made by the same writing staff.

A new episode is made available in the "More Episodes" section of the main menu, which allows you to download and play an episode free of charge for a week, until the next Thursday. However, these episodes can also be purchased in advance from the "More Episodes" section.

As of September 3, 2014, the app was scheduled to be removed from the app store on September 9, 2014. During the 6 days in between, all content has been reduced to $0.99, but servers remain for a limited time once the app is gone.

Gameplay[]

Surviving High School is a choice-based text adventure that follows Twin Branches High (formerly known as Centerscore High), a typical high school with very recognizable cliques of students. Players control several unique Twin Branch students throughout the game. They are given scenarios where they must choose between two or more decisions that may negatively or positively affect the outcome of each story. Stories are presented through episodes, which are grouped within seasons or sets. The game originally came with two free playable stories: Football Season and The New Girl, but now with a pack named Season 1: A New Start that a player will get for free if the app is updated. Besides the Season 1 pack and the weekly episode that are free, most of the other released content can be purchased in the game's store.

A reboot was implemented on September 5, 2012, known as the "A New Start Update", which made a multiple changes to the game. The "On Demand" section of the game (which allows players to buy specials or episodes previously aired) is currently known as "More Episodes" and the "Now Airing" section (which allowed players to download the latest episode) was entitled "Weekly Free Episode". The update also replaces the Football Season and The New Girl megapack with a new megapack entitled, Season 1: A New Start, which is five episodes.

Reception[]

  • Gamespot gave the game a 9.8 out of 10 for its mobile phone version.
  • Gamespot gave the iPhone OS version a 7 out of 10.
  • IGN gave the Nintendo DS version a 7 out of 10.
